Thursday, November 28, 2024 — Politeknik Statistika STIS officially held its Basic Training program at the Indonesian Student Regiment Training and Education Center (Lemdiklat Menwa Indonesia) Tarumanagara, located in Garut. The event will continue until Sunday, December 1, 2024. The training is attended by 33 participants consisting of the 18th Generation of the Student Regiment (Menwa) Batalyon Statistika and the 13th Generation of the Discipline Enforcement Unit (SPD). In addition, three students serve as supervisors, along with the field commander (Dansat Lapangan), vice field commander (Wadansat Lapangan), and operational and security officers.

In accordance with Article 30 Paragraph 1 of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, which states that “Every citizen has the right and obligation to participate in the defense of the country,” this training is a form of realization of that mandate through the participation of students in the Student Regiment and the Discipline Enforcement Unit. It also serves as a means for students to actively contribute and channel their potential in defense and community protection activities. As members of the academic community and future leaders of the nation, students are expected to develop personal qualities in terms of physical strength, mental resilience, and intellectual capacity — including critical thinking to address and analyze every problem faced.

To cultivate strong, high-integrity, and nation-oriented students, the training program includes leadership development and team collaboration exercises over several days. The first day began with an opening ceremony, followed by activities such as marching drills, physical training, night operations (caraka malam), military self-defense, and survival and mountaineering. Participants also received material on leadership, Command Method of Instruction (CMI), and the history of Menwa and SPD, all taught directly by instructors at Lemdiklat Menwa Indonesia Tarumanagara, Garut. The final day concluded with a closing ceremony, beret conferral, and rope-tying ceremony (pentalian).

Through the 2024/2025 Basic Military Training for the Student Regiment of Batalyon Statistika and the Discipline Enforcement Unit of Politeknik Statistika STIS, it is hoped that participants will develop a strong sense of national defense and patriotism, as a reflection of the Student Regiment’s concern for national conditions and its role in leadership development. The training also aims to introduce and instill the discipline and character expected of Menwa and SPD members, fostering a persistent, tenacious, and resilient mental attitude.

This Basic Training for Menwa and SPD, known as Diksar Menwa and SPD, is a mandatory prerequisite for all prospective members of the Student Regiment Batalyon Statistika and the Discipline Enforcement Unit before they are officially inaugurated as full members. Each activity is carefully designed to assess the readiness and agility of the 18th Generation of Menwa candidates and the 13th Generation of SPD candidates in fulfilling their duties.

“Leadership is developed daily, not in a day — through continual self-study, education, training, and experience.”
John C. Maxwell
