Zoom Meeting & YouTube Politeknik Statistika STIS
Description :Politeknik Statistika STIS continued its second series of the Webinar Series Statistika on Friday (28/05/2021), carrying the theme "Writing Statistics." The event was held virtually via Zoom Meeting and streamed live on the Politeknik Statistika STIS YouTube channel. This webinar was organized as part of the lead-up to the 2021 National Seminar on Official Statistics and The 1st International Conference on Data Science and Official Statistics (ICDSOS) 2021.
Moderated by Rini Rahani, SST, M.Stat, the webinar featured three speakers: Siskarossa Ika Oktora, SST, M.Stat, Dr. Hardius Usman, M.Si, and Dr. Waris Marsisno, M.Stat.
Strategies for Writing Scientific Articles for Beginner Authors
The first session was delivered by Siskarossa Ika Oktora, SST, M.Stat, titled “Strategies for Writing Scientific Articles for Beginner Authors.”
She began by introducing the concept of scientific articles and the importance of understanding both the purpose and structure of such articles. The standard structure commonly follows the IMRaD format: Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion.
She emphasized the Introduction as a critical part, as it presents the research problem and objectives. Reviewers often rely on this section to assess how compelling the article is. She also reminded participants to pay attention to the other sections—Methods, Results, and Discussion—as they are essential to the article’s overall quality.
In addition, she shared practical advice on how to prepare before submission, how to respond to rejection, and how to handle revision requests from journal editors.
“To produce good writing, authors should improve their literacy skills by reading extensively from credible, peer-reviewed sources,” she advised.
Getting Published in Reputable International Journals with Statistics
The second presentation was delivered by Dr. Hardius Usman, M.Si, with the topic “Getting Published in Reputable International Journals with Statistics.”
He began by stressing the importance of self-awareness, particularly understanding whether one identifies as a statistician. This self-understanding influences how research is approached and written.
He explained that statistics involve sampling techniques, data collection methods, and data analysis techniques. Clarifying the role of statistics in research—whether as the main subject or as a supporting tool—is crucial.
Dr. Hardius also introduced several reputable international journals and concluded his talk by sharing tips for achieving novelty in research, such as utilizing moderating and mediating variables in the analytical framework.
Managing References with Mendeley
The third speaker, Dr. Waris Marsisno, M.Stat, presented “Managing References with Mendeley.”
He began by explaining the definition and function of citations and references, highlighting their role in identifying sources, disseminating knowledge, avoiding plagiarism, and giving credit to original ideas.
He then provided a walkthrough on how to effectively use Mendeley Desktop for managing references in scientific writing.
Enthusiastic Participation from Attendees
Participants showed strong enthusiasm, demonstrated by the large number of questions submitted via Zoom chat and YouTube comments. The webinar attracted attendees from diverse backgrounds, reflecting the broad interest in scientific writing and statistical literacy.
