ICDSOS 2023:

Politeknik Statistika STIS successfully organized the International Conference on Data Science and Official Statistics (ICDSOS) 2023, a two-day event held in Jakarta, Indonesia. Carrying the theme “Harnessing Innovation in Data Science and Official Statistics to Address Global Challenges towards the Sustainable Development Goals,” the conference aimed to generate innovative and adaptive ideas and solutions related to issues, strategies, and methods utilizing data science and official statistics.

Friday (November 24) marked the first day of ICDSOS 2023. Held at Menara Danareksa, Central Jakarta, the event also served as a platform for Statistics Indonesia (Badan Pusat Statistik/BPS) to demonstrate its readiness to become a Regional Hub for Big Data and Data Science in the Asia-Pacific region. This readiness was conveyed directly by the Acting Head of BPS, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti.

As the keynote speaker, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti delivered deep insights related to the conference theme. In addition, five other speakers—Rachael Joanne Beaven, Arturo M Jr, Boediastoeti Ontowirjo, Anang Laksono, and Ronald Jansen—shared their expertise in data science and official statistics in an impressive manner. Their presence brought greater depth and richness to Plenary Session I, moderated by Dr. Eng. Arie Wahyu Wijayanto, S.S.T., M.T., making the first day of the event full of meaning and inspiration.

The event continued on Saturday (November 25) with Parallel Sessions and Plenary Session II, held virtually via Zoom Meeting and YouTube Live Streaming, maintaining high enthusiasm from the participants. This session was expertly moderated by Dr. Eng. Lya Hulliyyatus Suadaa, S.S.T., M.T., further enhancing the quality of the event.

Three distinguished speakers—Professor James Brown, Head of the Discipline of Mathematics at the University of Technology Sydney; Dr. Arief Gusnanto, Associate Professor at the University of Leeds; and Wayne Wobcke, Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales—provided invaluable contributions to the understanding and development of Big Data in the context of official statistics.

Professor James Brown addressed issues related to official statistics, exploring statistical frameworks crucial to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Meanwhile, Dr. Arief Gusnanto offered deep insights into big data, discussing its significant role and impact in the current information age. Wayne Wobcke, on the other hand, shared brilliant perspectives in data science and official statistics. Their participation made Plenary Session II a valuable platform to explore, discuss, and deepen understanding of the latest developments in official statistics, big data, and data science.

Before the official closing, Prof. Setia Pramana, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., announced the winners of the Best Paper and Best Presenter awards at ICDSOS 2023. The awards were divided into three categories: Applied Statistics, Data Science, and Official Statistics. Politeknik Statistika STIS won one of the awards—1st Best Paper in Data Science, awarded to Nur Ainun Daulay, Salwa Rizqina Putri, and Arie Wahyu Wijayanto for their paper titled “Granular and Cost-Effective Mosquito Habitat Suitability Index in Malaria Endemic Areas of West Papua: A Low and Medium Resolution Optical Satellite Imageries Approach.” Following the announcement, the event concluded with a group photo session with the winners.

As the curtain closed on the International Conference on Data Science and Official Statistics (ICDSOS) 2023, the greatest hope is that the momentum of success and inspiration achieved during the event will bring lasting impact to many. With various innovative ideas, adaptive solutions, and up-to-date insights shared by experts and practitioners in the fields of data science and official statistics, ICDSOS is expected to make a sustainable contribution to understanding and addressing global challenges in pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals.
