Comparative Study of Statistics Study Program, Jakarta State University

On Tuesday, March 1, Politeknik Statistika STIS welcomed a benchmarking visit from the delegation of Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ), as part of efforts to develop the learning process in the Statistics Study Program at UNJ’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The delegation was received by the Director of Politeknik Statistika STIS, Dr. Erni Tri Astuti, M.Math., along with other members of the leadership board.
During the meeting, Ir. Fariani Hermin, M.T., representing the UNJ delegation, inquired about various aspects of the academic programs and curriculum at STIS, including the thesis supervision system, academic journal practices, and internship (PKL) structure. One point of interest was the Statistical Information System specialization offered under the D-IV Statistical Computing Program.
Dr. Waris Marsisno, M.Stat. (Head of the Quality Assurance Unit) explained that one of the core competencies expected of graduates in this program is system design. Accordingly, students are equipped with supporting courses such as programming fundamentals. Moreover, students’ theses are often based on real-world problems, especially those arising within STIS or Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS). A notable outcome is the Sistem Informasi Terpadu (Sipadu), a system developed through a student thesis that is still actively used by the academic community. This integrated system supports various institutional activities such as faculty allocation, course scheduling, grading, and research repository management.
Regarding the Journal of Applied Statistics and Statistical Computing (ASKS)—which has been indexed in SINTA 2—Dr. Nasrudin, M.E. (Head of the Center for Research and Community Service) shared that the journal consistently publishes papers on a regular basis. Manuscripts are rigorously screened for relevance to the journal’s scope, and a thorough review process is conducted and documented within the journal management system.
On the subject of internships (PKL), he explained that the program at STIS differs from those at most other universities. The internship is focused on organizing an entire survey process, starting from problem identification, survey and instrument design, field data collection, data processing, analysis, to the dissemination of survey results. This comprehensive experience is conducted during semesters 5 and 6.
Further explanation on the teaching and thesis supervision system was provided by Dr. I Made Arcana, M.Sc. (Head of the D-IV Statistics Study Program). He stated that the learning model follows a structured package system, where students are streamed into specializations according to their study program in the third year. The thesis supervision process is supported by a monitoring and evaluation system involving not only the student and thesis advisor, but also academic supervisors and parents, to help ensure that students complete their theses on schedule.
In addition to the discussion, the UNJ delegation was also given a tour of several key areas at STIS, including the faculty offices, study program rooms, and executive offices. The benchmarking visit is expected to benefit not only UNJ, but also Politeknik Statistika STIS, paving the way for future collaborations.
